Anxiety is an emotion characterized by an unpleasant state of inner turmoil, often accompanied by nervous behavior, such as pacing back and forth, somatic complaints and thoughts.
It can be explained as a feeling of fear and worry that may lead to an overreaction in a specific situation and is often accompanied by physical symptoms such as muscular tension, fatigue and concentration problems.
People who face anxiety may withdraw from situations which have provoked the anxiety in the past. It can be short term or long term known as “state” and “trait” respectively.
Anxiety disorders on the other hand can be defined as a group of mental disorders characterized by feelings of anxiety and fear. They a partly genetic and often occur with other mental disorders such as bi-polar disorder, eating disorders and major depression.
There are many different types of anxiety namely:
- Existential Anxiety,
- Social Anxiety,
- Choice or Decision Anxiety and
- Psychiatric Anxiety.
Causes of anxiety include early life experiences such as family history and parenting factors and social issues such as gender socialization and learning experiences.
Anxiety is treatable. The first step is to get help for your anxiety. This can be done through a combination of medication and counselling. The benefits of counseling are that it helps people understand the behaviours, emotions and ideas that contribute to his/hers anxiety and learning how to modify them. It makes them understand and identify the life problems or events. It focuses on how to gain sense of control and learn specific techniques on how to cope with anxiety and make use of problem solving skills.
