Mental Health Awareness Month has indeed generated a lot of talk about mental health related issues among the layperson and professions alike. All of which we should be highly grateful for, considering the amount of stigma and resistance mental health issues are met with in Namibia, and other countries worldwide alike.

Why exactly it is that we are still hesitant to address these concerns and speak openly about them, could keep you and I both busy for quite some time. But that would not be the point of this article. Let us rather focus our energy on addressing an issue which haunts us all: seeing the dentist.

Common phrases like “I’m not crazy” or “Do I look like I belong in a loony bin?” still seem to be parallel to Psychology or counselling in Namibia in this day and age. The question needs to be asked; are people still so misinformed regarding mental health? Or is it more a case of self-stigmatisation? It deems necessary to inspect what brings about these misconceptions and whether it can be eliminated.

The stigma surrounding mental health may possibly stem from earlier beliefs that people with pathologies were viewed as crazy, violent or even possessed.

As part of our Mental Health Awareness campaign, we have written quite a few articles on the topic of Mental Health. We have made endless citations to the notion, and offered our best possible advice on how to maintain it.

Yet I ask myself, have we once stopped to give a clear understanding of what Mental Health is and what it looks like? Do we know what we mean when we say Mental Health? I would say it is about time we pay some much needed attention to the cause.
